Labor Day Weekend with Arron

Yeah, I know, a really creative title. But I'm all tuckered out from a fun weekend. Yeah, I know it's already Wednesday and I've failed in my blogging duties but I'm nearly 30 (yikes!) and I reserve the right to claim old age for my many failures.

Anyhow, here's a brief low-down on the Temple weekend adventures. Our good friend Arron came down from Baltimore to visit and with a visitor in town we had to show him the town (of which we have seen very little and know even less about). We ate some seriously salivate-at-the-thought pizza from across the street--yup, right there, and tried out the local Oshima Restaurant--no, I did not get a family discount, but then again it was only take-out--for some pretty good Japanese fare including a Fire Dragon Roll that I definitely recommend. Oh, and besides eating awesome food (including a tasty chicken enchilada prepared by Arron (minus the blue pee effect(for more information on this phenomenon, see Arron for details))), we also hit the Musuem of Natural History in Manhattan, the Labor Day parade (which we only saw the boring uncostumed part of) and the Bronx Zoo (with Skyfari in operation, YAY!). And blessedly, while Iz was at the hospital on Sunday I had Arron to help with the kids. I think a weekend with us was all the birth control necessary for him.

So I don't have the energy for a detailed description of all events but here are a few highlights.

My 3 favorite parade moments:
Councilman Steve representing the entire council on his solo (well, a few lucky assistants/office peons lent him stature) march.

A group (I'm not sure which) holding large signs professionally made with ball point pens. One had a website but I couldn't tell what it said. I liked this one about disaster relief. I suppose it's fitting that they didn't have supplies to make their sign.

Whenever people were going to cross the street the police put up these mesh barriers to guide the pedestrians and keep any adventurous people from joining the parade. One bare-chested rasta man who'd had a few too many decided to march in the parade. He was forcibly escorted by a group of officers after he attempted to do a headstand on the road. I'm bummed I missed a great photo opportunity.

This Hawaiian Smoothie with bubbles made me really miss Angels in Laie. They're sooo much better and cheaper.

Yeah, Keahi wanted to leave the moment we got there. He kept asking for the zoo. And Jarom kept grabbing my dress through the back of the stroller.

And I almost forgot to mention this gem of a sign that we saw on the way home.

The highlight of the zoo was without a doubt the Skyfari. I was grateful it didn't get stuck for 4 hours as it did just before it was closed down for a week or two last month. Keahi suffered through the heat and long wait during the parade and all our stops within the zoo to do silly things like look at animals all so he could go on the Skyfari. Here's a video of his joyous voyage. And I hope Arron emails me the pics of Jarom raising his hands in the air. Oh yeah, there's a 4 person limit per car regardless of how little the kids are so we had to go in two separate cars.

The museum was huge and overwhelming and we didn't spring for tickets to any of the special exhibits. But even the general areas were amazing. Keahi was, of course, most interested in the planets and meteorites. But the blue whale was also a high point. Literally. Oh and I also loved the "suggested" admission prices. I suppose we could have just responded to the requested $56 with a fiver but our--well, the boys' anyway...I think my Chinese blood would have stood strong--conscience would only allow a reasonable $40 payment. Still, it was money well spent and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. And I must say I was impressed with Arron's navigating skills. I've never driven to Manhattan without the GPS.

I'll post more zoo/museum pics in the next one since this one has become a novel.
